Ever seen fighting lizards?

In 2015, on a bright summer morning in the Eastern Ghats, I had just started collecting data for my PhD at the Indian Institute of Science. Suddenly, an unforgettable moment unfolded. Right before my eyes, two lizards engaged in an intense territorial battle—a scene I had only read about in scientific studies. Luckily, I had my camera ready to capture this remarkable moment of fighting lizards and share it with you all today.

Why Do Lizards Fight?

In the video above, two male lizards, called the Peninsular Rock Agama, are locked in a fierce battle for territory. These lizards, common across the Indian peninsula, are known for their territorial behaviour and often engage in fights with other males to claim the best locations. Why? A prime territory not only offers strategic views for spotting predators and mates but also boosts their chances of successful mating, allowing them to produce more offspring. Fighting lizards

Unique Behaviour of Lizards in Rocky Habitats

These lizards are typically found on rocky hillsides and large rock formations, especially in tourist spots like Hampi. High points on the hills, such as tall rocks or boulders, are valuable territory for them. From these vantage points, a male lizard can scan his surroundings, keep an eye on rivals, and spot potential mates—all while remaining safe from predators like snakes.

The Territorial Battle Unfolds

In this video, the fight centres around a rock pile that happens to be the highest point in the area—a prime location for a lizard's territory. The two lizards struggle intensely, each trying to claim the top spot. The fight is fierce but short-lived. Eventually, the attacking male falls off the boulder, leaving the victor in command of the prized territory.

However, it’s likely the defeated male didn’t give up. In the world of lizards, territorial disputes can reignite over and over. Alternatively, the fallen lizard might establish his own territory nearby, even attempting to mate with females from the winning male’s domain.

Observing fighting lizards offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural behaviors of reptiles in India. These battles aren’t just random acts of aggression but are key to their survival strategy, helping them secure territory for mating and safety. Understanding these behaviours also highlights the importance of specific habitats for wildlife, particularly in areas facing human encroachment. Fighting lizards
